In the crypt of the Basilica of St. Mang you can see the oldest Fresco in Germany, dating back to approx. the year 980. The High Castle above Füssen serves as a branch gallery of the Bavarian State Collections of Paintings. From Füssen it’s a short bus ride or drive to the famous Neuschwanstein Castle (Schloss Neuschwanstein), the Hohenschwangau Castle (Schloss Hohenschwangau, or High Swan County Palace), and the Wieskirche, the pilgrimage church of Wies, considered a rococo masterpiece. Füssen is the town farthest south on the Romantic Road (Romantische Straße) through southern Germany.
