Spanair is a Spanish airline, founded in 1986 but started flying in March 1988. Initially it operated with international charter flights but, starting in 1994, it began offering internal flights in Spain and to other European countries. From the beginning of April 2003, Spanair became part of the Star Alliance, a network of airlines. Spanair is 94.9% owned by SAS and 5.1% by Teinver. In 2006 Spanair carried 10.5 million passengers, confirming it as the second airline in Spain, after Iberia. On January 28, 2012 Spanair has ceased flight operations due to financial problems.
